"The elements force the melodies here into crooked growth. Each track on Giant Tadpoles Among Us carries a sort of phototropic slant; set on a giddy diagonal by the field recording confetti (cascades of sucked in words crafted from reversed conversation, wooden scrapes and impact tacked together into an organic typewriter mechanism) that swirls around and blots out large chunks of stereo space, leaving the guitars and voices to rise and swerve toward the sun along jaunty (but unavoidable) routes. The arrangements are pliable, comprised of a compositional bamboo that arches and diverges without snapping the pieces into dissociative ambient fragments, and even with the other rhythms and tonal activity that crumples against the bowed and bent totem core, I see each of this nine tracks as songs; boxed up constructions of beat and melody into which I read a loose, yet undoubtedly coherent, desire to communicate.

There's something autumnal about it - the commencement of transient disconnection and loose debris tumbling down from the trees. The linear is dislodged ever so slightly, and there is a commotion in the album's offsetting of place and chronology - sounds of the playground are blown forcefully into isolated patches of woodland and left to babble and loop, while house keys sway and jangle into guitars caught in a quivering, hyperventilated strum, forming mutually operative rhythms that slide gently out of parallel. I feel threatened by the way in which synchronicity peels apart - distrusting of the floor that cracks and shifts beneath me, clinging on helpless to the song that tries to assert itself: the one gravitated singularity in amongst the sound that jostles and wavers like tethered balloons."

//Biography//

Lend me your underbelly is the one-man-band

of Christian Berends from the Netherlands.

The music of Lend me your underbelly is

written through improvisation and experiment,

and is strongly characterised by a sentiment

of melancholy and urgency, consisting of

elements that are linked to experimental and

psychedelic rock, often taking place in

atmospheric settings, together with a pinch

of noise. Loud expressive, or approaching

silence.  Guitar, field recordings, vocals,

midi triggered samples and instruments,

loopers and other tools are used to explore

the boundaries between improvisation, studio

recordings, and performing on stage.

After putting out a few instrumental low

profile demos, in October 2013 the debut

album "Giant tadpoles among us" was released.

From this album, the 7 inch single

"Tiendoornig stekelbaarsje"  was taken, on

which a collaboration with Bosbeetle could

be heard on the song "Stormvloedkering". On

25 April 2015 the second album "Hover" will

be released. Hover consists of 5 fairly long

tracks that are interconnected through sound,

space and lyrical theme. Next to this, two

shortfilms that feature music from Lend me your underbelly will come out in 2015: "Home" (2 tracks) and "Omdat ik bij je ben moet je me uitleggen hoe ik moet leven"* (complete soundtrack). In parallel, the music of Lend me your underbelly is brought to the stage through live performances. Through effective use of cables, loopers, and live impulses, the music is presented in a direct manner, in which improvisations are not avoided. (*translates into: Because I'm with you, you have to explain me how to live.)

From 2001 until 2008, Christian played under the name Harfst-Ruus as guitarist in the black metal band Salacious Gods, where he could be heard on the album "Piene", and live on stage during Dutch and European tours. Currently, Christian plays also as a bass guitarist in the melodic rock/metal band Downburst, which are working on their debut album.

". . .Time is dilated, the reverberations of the guitars in the loop have a hypnotic effect, melancholic atmospheres/noise (In Other Ages We Were Bruce Lee, Offshore) that directly links to a musicality of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, while the more melodic (Ze Zelf Weet Dat Ook, Offshore) wink at the piano passages from Ólafur Arnalds and plush carpets in Portishead style. . . . . .Spectral interference from the background matrix, Floydian post-rock (Silent) and reverb shoegaze Slowdive (Jan) certify everything. . .."

"Behind this project, only brains are found. It is that, bushy, Dutch Christian Berends . . . On this disc of an hour, boredom never awaits us. This statement also applies to Background Noise Is Our Leader, final title of a quarter of an hour.

Difficult to determine the final style of Lend Me Your Underbelly in a single register. It is sometimes thought to refer to lo-fi Sparklehorse or Marnitude (the latter comparison is particularly evident in the vocals), while other passages are positively oriented post-rock. Overall, it also holds the influence of psychedelic noises embellished with field recordings . . . plays alternating between pure hypnotic and dynamic overlaying layers, giving rise to a fascinating result."

"First time I have listened to some demo records of Lend me your underbelly my thoughts were: "Wow, this sounds like an unreleased album of Pink Floyd from their early period". Since I'm huge fan of Pink Floyd this should be considered as sign, that I liked your music very much :) And now I think it's time to present Chris (actually "Lend me your underbelly" is his solo project) to a Bulgarian audience.

Hi Chris. I'd like to thank you for this interview. And here we go with questions.

Could you tell me more about. . . ."

Translated from Metal Hangar 18, 10 March 2014. Interview by Dimitar Stefanov. Read the full interview at Metal Hangar 18 here.

"Ik las ergens de volgende zinsnede: 'there's something autumnal about this cd'.

File Under, 1 May 2014.

Een jongen zingt met onvaste stem: "The sounds form a whole/ Fixating and fragmenting/ Shrieks pass and pops stick".

(1 November 2013).

Me Your Underbelly', getiteld 'Giant Tadpoles Among Us'.

". . . With a collection of pedals and other devices in front of him, weaving guitar patterns into songs. With a dull drum sound, the swirl of sound forms up slowly droning music, streaming by slowly. The melancholic vocals are gentle as well, creating a dreamy autumnal feeling. The careful finger picking guitar work looks as if it might be easily disturb shop visitors walking past. Still the sound captivates."

The Sleeping Shaman, 24 September 2014, Guido Segers. Find the review here.

Kortom ik luister naar 'Giant Tadpoles Among Us'.

Me Your Underbelly iets totaal anders.
